Being a fan of M.C. Escher`s work, I attempted to build a sculpture inspired by his work. Playing with perspective as well as the perception of space and depth were obviously par for the course.
I started with basic sketches of what I wanted to create.
I then attempted to build a first mock-up with clay. First, I drew the outlines on tracing paper which I then suspended in front of me. I then placed the mound of clay behind it and started molding the clay so as to match the drawn edges.
The tough part was that to achieve this ‘’flat’’ look in 3d, the eye must remain at the exact same distance from the work to avoid distortion. Any movement could prove fatal and could mean that I would have to start over.
Many painstakingly spent hours later, I finally achieved something I could be proud of.
